Task Force Announcement

**EXCITING NEWS**The Beaverton School District has responded positively to Beaverton Friends of Music’s request for a Task Force to find ways to improve music education in the BSD!

Carl Mead and Jeff Rose support this request and have allocated the money needed to create the Task Force.  The Task Force will go into effect this fall and is expected to generate recommendations for next year’s budget.  Watch this space for more specifics as they develop!

The Arts are Core

The Arts are Considered a Core Academic Subject by Oregon State Law:

School districts and public charter schools shall offer students instruction in mathematics, science, English, history, geography, economics, civics, physical education, health, the arts and second languages that meets the academic content standards adopted by the State Board of Education and meets the requirements adopted by the State Board of Education and the board of the school district or public charter school.”  — ORS 329.045(3)

The Arts are Considered a Core Academic Subject by National Law:

“The term ‘core academic subjects’ means English, reading or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts, history, and geography.”  —Elementary and Secondary Education Act (No Child Left Behind) PUBLIC LAW 107–110—JAN. 8, 2002, 115 STAT. 1958

Public Meeting with Dr. John Benham

 Beaverton Friends of Music advocacy coalition invites families and community members to a once-in-a-lifetime event: come learn dramatic new information that will help save music programs and promote quality education for ALL Beaverton students.  Dr. John Benham, author of Music Advocacy: Moving from Survival to Vision, is an internationally-renowned public school music researcher who has saved over $72M in music program cuts in nearly every state and province of North America over the past 32+ years of working as a music education advocate.  Dr. Benham is coming to Beaverton to conduct a landmark study of our music program over the last 10-15 years, and will present his findings in a public meeting in the auditorium at Southridge High School on Saturday, May 4th at 10:00AM.  The event is free and will include music performances by Beaverton students as well as special, entertaining activities for children.
